Live Butterfly Egg Kits

All butterfly egg kits come with more butterfly eggs than advertised

Care instructions:

Simply place the eggs directly onto a live nettle leaf. (All small pieces of leaf will have tiny eggs on, please put the entire contents onto a leaf) Potted stinging nettle or cut nettle in a cup of water work well. Once the eggs are placed securely on a flat nettle leaf that is attached to a live plant they will hatch safely, you will need to replace the nettle plant or add a new one once they have eaten most of it or they will crawl off.

Once the caterpillars are larger (3cm / 3rd moult) they tend to wander off the plant so they can be transferred to a tub or netted cage and fed on fresh picked nettles. These should be changed twice per day once in the morning and evening to keep the food fresh.

The colour of the egg will indicate how close they are to hatching. Eggs will start green then turn to yellow, then brown and then black tipped. Once the eggs are brown they will hatch within 1 day.

Raise and release pet butterflies by allowing fully grown caterpillars to hang and grip upside down on a grippy surface such as a bundle of sticks or a netted sleeve placed over a patch of nettles. If you need additional information or have any questions about raising caterpillars we would love to answer them. Email us at livebutterflyservices@yahoo.com

Butterfly Behaviour

Territorial Butterflies

Butterflies patrol territories based on resources, wind exposure and altitude.

Keeping your butterflies returning to your garden for generations to come is all about ensuring caterpillar food plant, nectar and sunshine are present and as abundant as possible during the summer. Erysimum is a great flower for early and late blooms in the garden.

Butterflies can have up to 4 generations per summer.

Small scale conservation for lepidoptera is largely dependant upon gardens. Compound flowers such as scabiosa are great for butterflies to feed on and will attract them to your location.
